WHO WE ARE...
First Stage is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the development of new material for the stage and screen.
We are a supportive, encouraging community of writers, actors, and directors. While technically a writers' group, First Stage relies on its community of professional actors to perform cold readings of new works as they are developed in its Tuesday night workshops. |
what we offer...
We offer the Writers' Workshop the first and third Tuesday of each month (currently online only). The workshops run from 6:00 - 9:30 p.m. Current dues-paying writer members may submit material to be read by professional actors. We currently allow non-member actors to be cast in the readings. In addition, non-members may attend our workshops as audience without cost.
Additional (online) Rehearsed Readings of completed original works are regularly held followed by intensive discussion. These readings are open to the general public.
Since being founded in 1983 by members of Robert Redford's Sundance Institute (Peter Hay, Didi Conn, Ethan Phillips and Virginia Morris), First Stage has helped develop hundreds of stage plays and film scripts. First Stage has been the launching pad for many plays that have gone on to successful productions in theaters throughout the country.
In 1998, our 15th anniversary year, First Stage was the proud recipient of the C. Bernard Jackson Award given by the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights. This award recognizes organizations that nurture, develop and support L.A. playwrights.
